There are a couple mechanisms in Maryland that reward those who invest in onsite solar. Net-energy metering lets homeowners and building owners earn credits for the extra electricity that their solar panels send back to the electric grid, lowering electric bills.
Homeowners and building owners in Maryland can also earn Solar Renewable Energy Credits (SRECs) for the energy their systems generate. These credits - which have varying values over time - can be sold on a marketplace for extra cash. If the solar system is interconnected between July 2024 and January 2028, the system will be eligible for enhanced credits through the Small Solar Energy Generating System Incentive Program for 15 years and regular SRECs for the remaining lifetime of the solar system.
