Weatherization is the process of protecting a home’s interior from outdoor elements such as extreme temperature differences, precipitation, and wind, with a focus on optimizing its energy efficiency.

Weatherization 101:
Weatherization almost always begins with a home energy audit. An audit may recommend:
  • Air sealing
  • Insulation
  • Moisture control
  • HVAC & ductwork upgrades
  • Energy efficiency upgrades
  • Energy conservation measures

The Maryland Clean Buildings Hub (the Hub), an initiative of the Maryland Energy Administration, empowers Maryland’s building owners to make well-informed energy investments in their properties by connecting them to financial, educational, and technical assistance. Sign-up for the Hub newsletter here. Have questions? Programs

The State of Maryland offers several no- and low-cost weatherization programs. Households that submit an application to the Department of Housing & Community Development or submit an application for Energy Assistance through the Department of Human Services may be screened for all three programs.

  • Weatherization Authorization Program (WAP): Maryland’s WAP assists income-eligible homeowners and renters by reducing heating and cooling costs through energy-conservation measures, while also addressing health and safety issues in the home. WAP is administered by local weatherization agencies, which are denoted below.
  • Maryland Energy Assistance Program: MEAP is a federally-funded program that provides free assistance to eligible Maryland households. The program is aimed at making homes more comfortable by repairing and replacing heating, cooling, and water heating systems.
