Thirteen Maryland Farms and agricultural businesses leveraged MEA's FY16 Mathias Ag Program to significantly reduce energy use in their operations. Grants up to $60,000 supported the installation of eligible energy efficiency measures as well as a solar installation. Seven Maryland poultry farms were among 13 agricultural businesses that improved energy efficiency through the FY16 Mathias Ag Program. These farms are saving an average of almost $7,000 a year after completion of their operational improvements, with payback on their project costs averaging about 8 years.
Milburn Orchards leveraged its Mathias Ag Program grant to combine high efficiency refrigeration upgrades with a 125 kW solar installation for total annual energy savings and generation valued at $23,000. The $318,000 project is expected to pay for itself in 14 years.
