The Maryland
Energy Administration (MEA) was formed in the 1970's
to provide energy efficiency programs and policy at the state
level in cooperation with US Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) and the US Department of Energy (DOE).
The Maryland Energy Administration and its program partners
actively educate all Maryland citizens, the government, media,
and other important constituencies to raise their awareness
of energy efficiency as an economic driver, a mechanism to
reduce pollution, and an instrument to increase national security
by increasing reliability and reducing dependence on imported
energy resources. MEA directly addresses issues, including:
appliance and equipment standards, energy research and development,
and energy management in the State of Maryland.
Energy encompasses a broad range of public policy and governmental
issues. How efficiently we use energy touches everything we
do -- not only the environment and waste management, but also
power supply, economic competitiveness, and energy security.
Energy will continue to be a major part of the State's agenda.
The strategic goals of the Maryland Energy Administration
are:
-
To
maximize energy efficiency, while promoting economic development,
- To improve the Maryland's environment by promoting clean
energy strategies,
- To coordinate and direct integrated energy planning,
- To prepare State government to respond to the changing
dynamics of the energy industry,
- To make the State of Maryland a leader in energy efficiency,
- To reduce the cost of energy to Maryland citizens,
- To leverage public/private partnerships in order to improve
the competitive position of Maryland industry, and
- To lower the operating expenses of State and local governments
while contributing to the improvement of air and water quality
in Maryland.
