No matter what type of home(s) you're building or renovating-colonial or contemporary, large or small-it can be built to the high performance standards of ENERGY STAR® Homes. Using ENERGY STAR products in home construction or remodeling demonstrates your commitment to excellence in building performance and long term durability.

The ENERGY STAR advantage allows builders and developers to increase profitability and marketing success through building homes with high levels of comfort, indoor air quality, and energy efficiency. ENERGY STAR homes - a home nationally recognized for greater value, lower operating costs, increased durability, comfort and safety.

How to participate:
An interested builder or contractor should:

  1. Become a Maryland and/or National ENERGY STAR partner
  2. Build or renovate a home to ENERGY STAR standards,. To become an official ENERGY STAR builder, a firm must first build a home that meets ENERGY STAR performance standards. The builder can assure this standard is met by working with a Certified Energy Rater throughout the planning and construction phases of a home. After the home is completed, it will have to be energy rated and score 86 points or higher on E-Star’s 0-to-100 point residential energy efficiency scale. To maintain a listing through the ENERGY STAR program, a builder construct a minimum of one ENERGY STAR home every 12 months.   3. Label
    Use the ENERGY STAR logo, consistent with the ENERGY STAR Identity Guidelines, on products, building sites and promotional materials to differentiate your energy-efficient product.
  4. Train
    Participate in ENERGY STAR training courses offered to partners to enhance contractor knowledge of energy efficienct techonologies and installation techniques.
  5. Promote
    ENERGY STAR offers a variety of marketing resources and sponsors product-specific national campaigns. Find out how other partners are promoting ENERGY STAR to identify joint advertising opportunities. See our building partners New Homes Ad campaign (link)
  6. Keep Informed
    To maintain ENERGY STAR's commitment to energy efficiency, our specifications are constantly updated. Stay on top of specifications in development and attend partner meetings.
  7. Use ENERGY STAR to Save Energy within Your Organization
    Reduce your energy costs with ENERGY STAR business improvement, get tips on facility energy management, purchasing/procuring ENERGY STAR qualified products and, reducing computer energy use with monitor power management, and more.
  8. Get Recognized
    Now that you've developed your ENERGY STAR program, apply for Partner of the Year. Other recognition includes listing on the Maryland ENERGY STAR website.
