Extreme Cold Weather = Higher Bills

We are all in this together, and we all know this winter has been especially grueling. Utility bills from the polar vortex weather event are coming due and it’s important that we’re prepared for the financial realities of increased energy usage. The extreme cold this winter has created high demands on our power grid and, in turn, high demands on our wallets.

Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley and Maryland State Agencies, including Department of Human Resources (DHR), Public Service Commission (PSC) and the Maryland Energy Administration, came together to come up with solutions to help Marylanders who are experiencing financial challenges with unusually high heating bills.

The DHR will administer $20 million in state provided supplemental cold weather bill assistance, targeting Marylanders who are in current need of energy bill assistance. The additional funds are available to households who apply and qualify based on household income level.

 

Our Maryland utilities have also come together to help Marylanders in need of assistance, through various programs and payment plans.
